You probably don’t need to be convinced that your business should have some sort of social media presence. You’re there, and your customers are there, too. You get that. You may not know exactly how to go about starting and building a social media following for your business, though, and that’s where we can help. Here are some points to consider when you’re getting started.

  • Business accounts. Make sure that you set up business pages/accounts on each platform that you choose. This will help with setting up ads and get rid of that “am I talking to a person or a company?” problem you run into with some small businesses. Even if don’t think you’ll be running ads on social media, you may want to set up your account as a business just in case. You’ll be saving yourself a lot of hassle down the road.   • Facebook. Facebook is played out, right? It’s easy to assume your audience isn’t on Facebook because you may not be, but Facebook is still a leading online ads platform. Apart from ads, Facebook is useful as a business tool. It’s a place to keep your business’s address, hours, and other important information. Plus, if you want to run Instagram ads at some point, since they are owned by Facebook, so you’ll need an account to do that. At the very least, you’ll want to claim a Facebook page for your business so someone else can’t grab it later.

  • Handles. Pick a handle (public user name) that is as close to the name of your business as possible. This is not the time to be clever and impress your 11th grade English teacher with your obscure Shakespeare references. You’ll want a handle that is easy for your customers to remember when they’re trying to show their friends your latest product drop.

  • Content. It doesn't have to be all sales all the time, and it's up to you to decide how personal or professional your brand tone should be. Your social media activity reflects your brand just as much as your products and services do. It’s up to you to craft the messages you want to put out there. Don’t get hung up on not being a writer or not being a photographer. Social media isn’t about perfection. Be you. Be real. Be profesh.

There is always a new hotness in social media, and each new platform comes with a learning curve.
